Why Safe Editing Helps You Update Your Website Smoothly
Safe editing prevents layout issues, broken sections, and accidental design changes. When you follow a clear process, you can update your website quickly without worrying about undoing mistakes.

Duplicate Your Page Before Editing
Go to Pages → ••• → Duplicate. This creates a backup version of your page so you always have a safe copy to return to. A duplicate protects your layout while you experiment or make updates.
Short, simple backups keep your site stable.
Lock Complex Sections
Locked sections are sections where you freeze the layout so nothing shifts while you edit. This keeps your spacing stable and prevents text or images from pushing things around.
Open the section settings and adjust Section → Height → Fixed. This freezes the section’s height. Then open each block and turn Block → Stretch → Off so your blocks don’t expand or stretch unexpectedly.
These settings prevent your layout from shifting while you edit text or replace images. Locked sections help your website stay consistent across devices.
Save Reusable Sections as Templates
Templates are saved sections you can reuse anywhere on your site. They store the layout, spacing, and styling so you don’t have to rebuild the design every time.
Click Section → ••• → Save as Template. This lets you reuse your favorite layouts without rebuilding them. Templates help you update your website faster and keep your design consistent.
Use templates for services, testimonials, pricing, or intro sections.
Edit Inside Blocks Instead of Moving Sections
Editing inside blocks means you click directly into your Text Blocks, Image Blocks, or Button Blocks to make changes, instead of dragging or shifting the entire section. This keeps your layout stable and protects the spacing you already designed.
Click directly into your blocks to update text, swap images, or adjust buttons. Avoid dragging whole sections unless you’re intentionally reorganizing your page.
When you edit inside the block, Squarespace only updates that one element. Your spacing, alignment, and mobile layout stay exactly the way you designed them.
If you drag or move the entire section just to make a small edit, Squarespace recalculates the spacing around every block in that section. This can cause:
Text blocks to shift out of alignment
Images to resize or jump positions
Buttons to move unexpectedly
Mobile layouts to break or stack incorrectly
Spacing to become uneven across the page
Small edits inside blocks protect your design from unexpected changes and keep your layout clean, consistent, and stable across devices.
Replace Images Instead of Re‑adding Them
Replacing an image means you click the existing image and choose Replace → Upload. This swaps the file inside the same block while keeping all your original design settings in place.
When you replace an image, Squarespace keeps:
Your exact image size
Your cropping
Your padding and spacing
Your alignment
Your mobile scaling
This is the safest way to update visuals without breaking your layout.
